Review: Love & Respect, Cracking the Communication Code
What is it?
Love & Respect, Cracking the Communication Code study is a weekend marriage conference on DVDs formatted for the use of small groups. The speaker is author of Love & Respect, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs along with his wife Sarah. The theme is simple. It is also very powerful. A wife has one driving need—to feel loved. When that need is met, she is happy. A husband has one driving need—to feel respected. When that need is met, he is happy. When either of these needs isn’t met, things get crazy.
The material deals with three major questions:
- Why do we negatively react to each other? (The Crazy Cycle)
- How do we motivate each other? (The Energizing Cycle)
- What if my spouse isn’t responding? (The Rewarded Cycle)
Love & Respect, Cracking the Communication Code reveals why spouses react negatively to each other, and how they can deal with such conflict quickly, easily and biblically.
The DVD portion of each week will take on average, 20-30 minutes. Guests follow along in workbooks and fill in blanks of key sentences. After the video there are discussion questions provided for the group.
Who is this material for?
Anyone who wants to change the way they and their spouses talk to, think about and treat each other. Couples who are in a marriage crisis, or couples who want to start fresh.
What’s the time commitment?
This is a fourteen week study. There is no written homework. There is behavior “home” work that involves spouses making statements of change that they will focus on in the upcoming week.
Positive Feedback:
The material has an uncomplicated message that gets to the heart of the matter for most couples. We found this to be so simple in concept yet extremely powerful when applied. The speaker is easy to listen to, has a sense of humor, and is deliberate in acknowledging that his audience may not all be church attendees.
Are there any challenges about this material?
Fourteen weeks may be a bit long for some but this material is well worth the time investment!
What’s the cost?
The church owns the DVD collection which can be checked out from Bethel marriage coordinators, Greg and Jill Cullen. Small Group workbooks are $14 each at loveandrespect.com. A Small Group Discussion Guide is recommended for the Grow Group leaders. It can be purchased at loveandrespect.com for about $10.
